Sweet Taste Info: Alternative Sweeteners and Weight Loss

Drinking a so-called ‘light coke’ got me thinking. How come it tastes so sweet and yet can be of zero calories? Does it really help in losing weight? Isn’t there any hidden agenda or missed-out information that you and I should know? Well, read on.

Most of us who are undergoing a weight loss diet might have chosen zero-calorie soft drinks when we’re hanging out with friends for dinner right? That is given the time when we find it rather hard to control our cravings for soft drinks, rather than ordering ourselves green or Chinese tea, or plain water; we’ll go with another bottle of soft drink to avoid alcoholic beverages. But actually, zero-calorie drinks aren’t the only product using artificial sweeteners. There are various other products in the market using this substitute for sugar with no calorie add on.

However, do artificial sweeteners help with weight control? Do they really work?

Ironically, the research studies that were done on rats reported that intense sweeteners such as saccharin, stimulates appetite and lead to weight gain instead of loss. Of course, research studies have been done on people as well saw no changes in appetite or a little decline in feelings of hunger. In conclusion, researchers stated that most people’s food intakes do not change much when they use artificial sweeteners.

Then, rise another question; whether sweet taste actually stimulate or depress appetite?

Simply said, it was found that it could do neither stimulating nor depressing a person’s appetite. In the end, it depends almost thoroughly on a person’s total amount of calorie intakes. If the sweeteners have the effect of lowering calorie intakes, however, this may leave people hungry, so that they compensate at later meals. Thus to say, the key towards successful weight loss is to conform to the idea of having less calories (about 10% cut) from the total amount of your daily activities requirement. For example, if you’ve calculated the rough approximation of your daily activities required is about 1800 calories (usually for normal non-vigorous routines a day), you should try to consume no more than 1600 calories or less to achieve a cut of 200 calories, which your body will eventually replace it by calories from stored fats.

Using artificial sweeteners alone will not automatically lower energy intake. Healthy eating plan and informed diet formula, as well as strategic activities decision planning throughout the day is keys to control energy intake successfully in your weight loss plan.
