Causes, Symptoms of Nosebleed and How to Treat It

Nosebleed or Epistaxis (which is the medic name for nosebleed) normally happens when the capillary veins in a human’s nostrils severed due to certain causes. However, that is only the generally overview of the case. Nosebleed can sometimes become utterly severe and life threatening. It can also be caused by many factors aside to the typical hemorrhage from the nose. But sometimes too, nosebleed can also occur due to no specific reason or cause. Recurrent nosebleed can lead to anemia and worsen the case if you simultaneously experiencing iron deficiency.

Causes of nosebleed or epistaxis are numerous. Some of them are:

  • Injuries within the nose or those that affects the nose such as physical accidents like a sharp blow to the face that accompanies nasal fracture.
  • Excessively cold or dry temperature
  • Blowing the nose too hard and rigorous sneezing - This is because the skin within the nose is very soft and thin, making it relatively vulnerable and sensitive to harsh and rigorous movements.
  • Intranasal tumors
  • Certain health conditions such as infectious diseases, hypertension, blood dyscrasias etc.
  • Vitamin C or K deficiency
  • Foreign bodies such as in using the finger or certain dangerous and relatively sharp tools in nose-picking

Don’t panic! Do not panic when you had a nosebleed. First thing that you have to do is to stop the bleeding from getting worse.

What you can do to stop the bleeding:

i. Sit down comfortably and lean or tilt your head a little to the front

ii. Pinch softly the hard part of the nose and slowly to the soft part together using you thumb and index finger for about 5 minutes. Use the towel to clean off the blood if it’s too excessive.

iii. And then, using ice packs place it between your eyes and nose. Continue to pinch regularly.

iv. After about 10 to 15 minutes stop the pinching and check whether the bleeding has stop or not.

v. Avoid from sneezing, blowing or picking your nose because this will make it bleed again and become worse.

vi. If you see that the bleeding was a lot and severe, please consult a physician as soon as possible. Either way and especially if it is your first time experiencing it, you should just have it check up by professional to know the cause of the nosebleed.

Generally, nosebleed will stop when the blood clots and this can be encouraged by using ice (such as used in the above how-to tips). Pressure should be firm and maintain the pressure up to the period mentioned above. It can feel a little numb but bear with it. By tilting your head a little, you are able to decrease chances of nausea and airway obstruction.
